Rebuilding public trust in science & bridging the gap between media & academia

About Caitlin

I'm Caitlin Looby — a scientist turned journalist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For more than a decade, I hiked through tropical cloud forests to study soil and climate change. Now, I cover the Great Lakes for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where I bring a scientist’s lens to environmental reporting.

I’m available for freelance gigs in writing and editing as well as public speaking engagements.

Before landing in Wisconsin, I worked at the University of Minnesota, where I taught science communication, developed workshops and trained scientists on how to better connect with the public. My work has appeared on the radio, in university publications, national and local media, magazines and even outdoor brand platforms.

When I'm not writing or reporting, you’ll find me outside — paddling, hiking, camping or hanging out with my two dogs, Odessa and Olivia.
